Licensed Depth Therapy and Clinical Hypnosis in Minneapolis–St. Paul

Therapy for Porn Addiction and Unwanted Porn Use

Depth-oriented work for patterns that have become difficult to control through willpower alone.

You Might Be Struggling If…

You’ve tried to stop and keep going back

You spend more time watching than you intend to

You notice the content escalating over time

You're hiding the behavior from people in your life

You're using porn to manage stress, boredom, anxiety, or uncomfortable feelings

It's affecting your confidence, mood, focus, or relationships

How the Pattern Forms

Porn provides immediate stimulation and escape. When anxiety, boredom, or discomfort builds, the brain reaches for what works quickly.

The brain learns from relief. What works gets repeated. Over time, repetition strengthens the pathway, and what once felt optional begins to feel automatic — and the less it requires conscious choice.

What often makes this cycle particularly strong is shame. When the behavior becomes secret and self-judged, it gains power. The more shame builds, the more likely you are to return to porn for escape, which produces more shame, and the loop tightens.

This isn't a character flaw. It's a reinforced pattern. And it's why willpower alone rarely resolves it.

The Quiet Cost of the Pattern

Compulsive porn use rarely stays contained to the behavior itself. Over time, it shapes the texture of daily life.

People often notice:

  • Greater shame and self-criticism

  • Withdrawal from social or intimate relationships

  • Heightened anxiety, irritability, or emotional numbness

  • Escalation into content that feels misaligned with their values

  • A narrowing of interests or motivation outside the behavior

  • Decreased satisfaction in real-life intimacy

  • Reduced concentration and productivity

  • Increased secrecy and compartmentalization

What Sessions Look Like

01

We map the pattern carefully. Together we identify when the behavior shows up, what it regulates, and what it costs. We look at the triggers, the timing, the rituals around it, and the conscious decisions and deeper automatic dynamics at play.

02

We address the shame underneath. Shame is what keeps the loop tightest. When the behavior is approached calmly, directly, and without moralizing, it loses much of its grip. The work isn't about adding more self-discipline; it's about changing the emotional charge that drives the cycle.

We work with depth therapy and, when helpful, Clinical Hypnosis. Compulsive porn use lives largely below conscious awareness, in the automatic reactions, the urges, the learned relief-seeking. Insight and depth-oriented work address these dynamics carefully. Sometimes Clinical Hypnosis (also called Hypnotherapy) can also be a useful addition, particularly well-suited to working directly with patterns that run beneath conscious effort. Hypnosis is never required and is introduced only when it feels right.

The goal is durable change, not white-knuckling. The aim is not suppression through willpower alone. It's a real reorganization of how the pattern operates, so the urge no longer feels inevitable, and the energy that was going into the cycle can go somewhere better.

Who This Work Tends to Help Most

This work is designed for people who want to address the pattern at its roots, where it was learned, where it's reinforced, and where lasting change actually happens.

If you value psychological depth, honesty, and steady inner work over willpower, tracking apps, or accountability-only structures, this work may be a strong fit.

My clients tend to be thoughtful and capable in many areas of their lives, and quietly exhausted by a pattern they haven't been able to resolve on their own. Many have tried other approaches (12-step, blocking software, sheer willpower, accountability partners) and are looking for something deeper, thorough, and more honest about what's actually driving the cycle.

This work is also part of my broader practice with compulsive behaviors more generally, including digital/AI use, gambling, gaming, shopping, and scrolling.
